OldGill Betting Review

4.0
By:Mike Jones

OldGill is one of the newest sites in the Australian betting landscape, having launched in August of 2024. OldGill differentiates itself from the pack with a personality-filled marketing theme, with an old bloke called Gill running the show on their quirky website and app – fans of The Simpsons will be well aware of the similarities between this Gill and the persistently failing character of the same name in the animated series, which is mirrored in the blue and yellow colour scheme of this betting site. But whether you like Homer and co or not, there is plenty to dig your teeth into at this vibrant new bookie.

About OldGill

OldGill jumped onto the betting scene in August of 2024, yet another of what feels like an endless supply of new be tting sites utilising the BetCloud platform. But while that may suggest that they are just another version of an array of bookies you’ve probably already used, every site has its points of difference, and OldGill is no exception.

The first thing you’ll notice about this Victorian betting site is the quirky OldGill website, with a playful design that looks a hell of a lot like a throwback to The Simpsons. Of course, looks aren’t everything, but fortunately the website is also super easy to use and the mobile app, available for iOS and Android, is no different.

OldGill offers a selection of horse racing betting markets and sports markets which won’t blow you away, but which will be enough to keep most punters happy. For racing they have all the standard markets you would expect, while they offer a reasonable selection of sports for a new bookie. If you’re looking for the broadest selection of things to bet on from a sporting perspective you won’t find it here, but there will be enough to keep most punters happy.

And as for the odds? For a new bookie, they are pretty good at OldGill. Their racing odds are right around industry average if not a little better, while I’ve managed to find some odds that are competitive with the best for certain sporting markets. This isn’t a universal truth; some of their sporting odds do leave a little more to be desired, but if you are shopping around for the best value then OldGill are certainly worth checking out.

If you are using OldGill and need to get into contact with them, I’m pleased to report that you will have plenty of options. They have a live chat feature – my preferred form of contact – every day of the week, while you can also send them an email or give them a ring if you would rather go down that route. In my experience, the customer support agents are generally pretty helpful, too.

In terms of banking, there is plenty of room for improvement, with a very limited selection for both deposits and withdrawals available with OldGill. For deposits, you can drop a minimum of $10 into your OldGill account using debit/credit card (immediate) or bank transfer (might take a few hours or day or so), while your withdrawal options are limited to just bank transfer, and this will take a day or so.

Overall, OldGill does bear plenty of similarities to a whole lot of other new betting sites, but of the array of new ones hanging around they are probably on the upper end of the scale in terms of quality. Their solid odds are a major reason why, while a sleek website and quality OldGill mobile app also help to make them a better than average new betting site.

OldGill Review Pros & Cons (+ Verdict)

Whether we are talking about new local betting sites or global giants of the industry, every single bookmaker has strengths and weaknesses. Some, of course, have a lot more of the former and others more of the latter, but there are pros and cons to every betting site, regardless of their popularity. Below, we take a look at the main ones you’ll notice with OldGill.

👍OldGill Strengths

Here’s all the most important pros you should know about OldGill:

  • Fun and unique website: One of the primary ways that betting sites can be differentiated is through their design. While this doesn’t directly impact whether they are a good site or not, a more aesthetically pleasing website is certainly never a bad thing, and OldGill definitely has one of those.
  • Good customer service: Customer service is one of those things that you will never think about until you need it, and OldGill offers a good platform for those in need of help. They offer three different ways to get into contact with them; phone, email, and best of all, live chat.
  • Solid odds: It is generally difficult for new betting sites to offer odds that are comparable with the best betting sites in Australia, but OldGill does a pretty good job of providing value to their customers which is above average.

👎OldGill Weaknesses

Here’s all the most important cons you should know about OldGill:

  • Smaller range of different sports available: Another common problem for new betting sites is providing sports beyond the mainstream for customers. Unfortunately, this is a trend that OldGill falls victim too, with their range of different available sports to bet on not nearly as eclectic as some of their competitors.
  • Limited payment options on offer: If you are happy to use the most common payment methods then this will not bother you one iota, but if you like to use ApplePay and PayPal betting sites, you will have to look elsewhere. Deposits are limited to debit/credit card and bank transfer, and withdrawals only the latter.
  • No live streaming: Live streaming has become increasingly popular over recent years as it becomes more available, with many punters now accustomed to being able to place a bet and watch the event – particularly if it is racing – unfold on the same platform. Of course, having live streaming available means having the money to pay for the broadcast rights, making it tough for small betting sites, and OldGill falls into this category of new bookies with no live streaming available.

👨‍⚖️OldGill Bookmaker Verdict

Overall, the above pros and cons probably look reasonable for OldGill compared to some of their fellow new bookmakers. If you really care about payment options or live streaming then you might not agree, but for most, the presence of good odds and strong customer support will probably outweigh that – though the limited range of sports markets certainly doesn’t help their cause.

QuestBet Features

Now to the features – those unique components of a betting site that help them to stand out from the crowd. Of course, not all betting sites have them – some are pretty cookie cutter and basically just offer a simple platform for bettors to punt with, which is more than okay for some punters. But standout features can certainly help to get new customers through the door. OldGill isn’t exactly bursting at the seams with them, but there are a couple of notable things about this bookie that provide some sort of a point of difference.

Mystery Bet

Mystery bet is the most obvious feature of OldGill that you will not find with most betting sites. Essentially, this is where OldGill will offer different odds - $2, $4 or $8 – for a certain market, without telling you what it is. This obviously takes all the control out of your hands, but it can be a fun way to bet small amounts and can make you a little bit of coin if you’re lucky. Of course, OldGill has all the control here so we certainly wouldn’t recommend putting all your eggs in the Mystery Bet basket, but if you are just looking to place a fun bet with an amount of money that you are happy to let go of, then Mystery Bet can be a good option for you. More than anything, this provides a unique point of different for OldGill.

Funky website design

Maybe it seems like scratching the bottom of the barrel to call a sleek website a feature, but while it certainly doesn’t tangibly change all that much, it is a hell of a lot nicer to navigate your way around an aesthetically pleasing website and app. OldGill have used the BetCloud design, which makes the navigational aspect identical to many other betting sites, but what is unique is the colours and images scattered across the website and app. The bright colours, as mentioned earlier in this OldGill review, are reminiscent of many of our favourite childhood show in The Simpsons, with OldGill himself something of a parody of the perpetual failure known as Gill from that series. Again, this won’t quantifiably change the outcome of your betting, but it can provide a little bit more of an enjoyable experience.

OldGill Odds

Now it’s time to take a look at the odds that OldGill offer. This is a pretty pivotal part of any betting site, for obvious reasons. You might look at two sites which offer odds and think that they are pretty similar, but the small differences in value that you get can ultimately add up. It’s hard enough to beat the bookies at the best of time, so you won’t to at least make sure that you are getting something close to the best odds available to give yourself a chance.

This can be a pretty common problem for new betting sites, who simply don’t have the capacity to offer leading odds in most markets. OldGill is certainly not at the head of the pack and will have inferior average odds to some of the biggest players in the industry, but they are far from the worst and for a new bookie do a pretty good job of providing value to punters.

For racing, you will find that the fixed odds available with OldGill for Australian and New Zealand racing is generally around the industry average. What’s more, you can also dig your teeth into the Tote odds here too, so you have a couple of choices for how you want to play it.

As for sports, it’s a similar story. For some markets that I have seen OldGill is actually right the best you can find in terms of odds, though that is not universally the case, so it’s certainly worth doing your shopping. In general though, for a new bookmaker they do a good job of providing reasonable odds for sporting markets.

This is more the case with standard markets than the more obscure though – a common trend among new bookies. If you’re simply looking at line or head to head bets then OldGill can be a decent option, though if you dig into the more obscure markets then it’s generally hard for these sites to compete with the biggest ones.

Overall, though, while OldGill is far from an industry leader, they offer odds that are generally at least around industry average, if not better. For a betting site as new as they are, this is certainly worth at least a pass mark.

OldGill Markets

Now you know a little bit about the odds with OldGill, let’s take a look at the markets. This is often a similar story to what I rambled on about with the odds; while the biggest bookies will have every market under the sun and then some, smaller and newer betting sites generally struggle to provide nearly as many and will tend to offer just the more basic options for punters.

OldGill falls somewhere into the middle. There is no doubt that if you shop around different betting sites on major leagues, you will find a broader selection of markets – generally this difference comes in the form of in-depth player props, as well as things like alternate lines, half-time lines and so on.

Depending on exactly what it is you are betting on, OldGill can have a decent selection of markets, though certainly not industry leading. Major sports and leagues are where you will find the best range – this is pretty par for the course for betting sites – though if you are going to start looking for extensive markets in less popular sports then you are best off looking elsewhere.

OldGill, for a new site, does actually have a pretty decent selection of different sports to bet on, so you won’t just be stuck betting on things like AFL, NBA and NRL betting if you are betting with them. The only issue is that for those smaller sports, you are going to only have the most basic markets available to you.

In terms of racing, there is not all that much to discuss. There isn’t usually a whole lot separating different bookmakers when looking at their racing markets – they will offer win/place bets as well as exotics like trifecta, quinella and First Four, and OldGill is no different. One tick is that they offer both fixed odds and Tote betting, which isn’t available everywhere.

Overall, OldGill sits around about where you would expect in terms of their range of markets. They are a new site, so don’t expect them to be leading the pack for less common markets, but while there are plenty of bookies that have a broader selection than they do, OldGill is certainly doing a better job than many competitors, too.

OldGill Live Betting

Live betting is a dynamic and increasingly popular way of betting which requires a very different skill set, and for punters to be pretty quick on the trigger. As the name suggests, this enables you to bet on live sports and racing, rather than simply before they get underway.

For racing in particular, this is unsurprisingly something you need to be quick with – races don’t last for very long, but some bookmakers do offer odds once they get underway for those who think they can read how a race will pan out. For sporting events, clearly you have a little more time, but as you might have guessed the odds change pretty quickly for both of them as the situation changes.

But while this is increasingly popular, it is still not widely available on all betting sites, and unfortunately OldGill is one where you will not find it. This is not a great surprise – new sites don’t usually have live betting available straight out of the blocks, though that does not meant that they never will.

For the time being, however, if you are going to bet with OldGill, you will need to be satisfied with standard old pre-event betting. For most punters this is not a major issue and you can, of course, split your betting across multiple sites – meaning you’ll just head elsewhere if you want to place a live bet – but if live betting is your go to then you won’t find what you want at OldGill.

OldGill App

Mobile apps are virtually a necessity for any betting site worth their salt these days, and OldGill has ensured they don’t miss the huge slice of the betting population that prefers to bet from their phone by offering an app basically as soon as they opened their doors in 2024.

The OldGill mobile app is available for both iOS and Android users, and offers a relatively seamless experience for punters wishing to bet with OldGill on the go. Once you download it, you will be greeted by the familiar blue and yellow OldGill theme, as well, of course, as images of a teary eyed Old Gill himself, as you can see in the screenshot above.

The home page of the app, as do all apps which use the increasingly common BetCloud platform, will show a bunch of featured races which you can quickly and easily click into – or even select one of the top picks without leaving the home screen. If you want to click through to more races, simply follow the prompts.

Likewise for sports. If you’re someone who prefers to try their hand on sports rather than racing, you can easily toggle through to them at the top of the OldGill betting app home page. From there, simply select the sport you want to bet on, then the league you want to bet on, then the match you want to bet on and finally, you guessed it, the market that you want to bet on.

As is commonplace with online betting apps nowadays, you can also do a whole lot more than just place bets on the OldGill mobile app. Need to get into contact with them for some reason? You can do it from your phone. Likewise if you want to deposit, withdraw, make an account – hell, even if you just want to read about OldGill’s licensing and regulations, you can do it all on the app.

This is all pretty standard fare for a mobile betting app in this day and age, meaning that most important of all is that the OldGill mobile app is actually functional. Generally BetCloud apps do load pretty quickly and are relatively easy to use, and that’s no different with OldGill. In my time using it, I haven’t encountered any major glitches, and the overall betting experience on the app has been a good one.

Overall this is a pretty good quality app. Given it uses the same platform as many other new betting sites in Australia, the main thing which differentiates it is the OldGill colour theme, but in this case being similar to other apps isn’t a bad thing. It works, it does what it is supposed to do, and it provides a simple alternative to your computer when betting with OldGill.

OldGill Promotions

Promotions are one of the many things that betting sites use to attract new customers, and OldGill is no different. There are a few promos that you can look at with them that you can find quickly and easily by clicking on the ‘Promos’ tab in the main menu – shock horror.

Australian regulations dictate that we can’t tell you exactly what promotions a betting site offers, and you won’t be able to see them without being signed up and logged in. Not that this is all that big a deal – promotions are generally going to change pretty regularly, so if we told you what they had on offer at the time of writing it may very well be different by the time you read this anyway.

What we can tell you, though, is that the OldGill promotions selection is reasonable albeit unspectacular. They do have some for you to trawl through and try to eke a bit of value out of, but overall this is not an area in which OldGill is exactly excelling.

OldGill Withdrawal

The ultimate aim of betting is to have some money to withdraw, so if you do manage to get to that point, kudos to you! Now comes the task of getting the money from your betting site to your bank account, the ease of which can vary depending on which betting site you are using.

Some will offer a pretty broad range of different withdrawal methods for you to choose from, though pretty much universally this will be smaller than the range you will have for depositing. That is the case with OldGill, too, albeit only just – given they offer only two deposit methods there could not be too many less withdrawal options, and you guessed it, their number of options comes in at one.

That option is bank transfer. For most people, yours truly included, this will not be a problem – bank transfer is what I would use for every bookie regardless of how many options they use. If you don’t like using this method, however, then you might be better off looking elsewhere.

OldGill withdrawal time, as it is with every betting site, will take a little while to reach your bank account. I have not personally encountered any issues with the length of time this does take – generally it’s been without my bank account within one or two days, which is fine by me. It’s not the fastest withdrawal time going around, but nor is it a major problem. Note that the minimum withdrawal with OldGill is $10.

Overall, the withdrawal component of OldGill is very, very basic in the sense that you have just one option available to you. But this is a tried and tested method of withdrawal, and one which you will likely use at any betting site anyway, so if this applies to you then you will have no issues with what’s available for withdrawals at OldGill.

OldGill Customer Support

As we near the end of this detailed OldGill review, it is time to take a look at the customer support platform that they offer. Already we mentioned this briefly earlier, noting it as a strength of theirs, so it will come as no surprise to you that this will be a positive review of their customer service.

Every betting site will offer some form of customer support, but what differentiates some bookies from others is primarily how many different modes of contact they have, as well, of course, as how responsive and helpful the agents are.

There is really a selection of three different contact methods that betting sites will have, and OldGill ticks a big box by offering all of them for their customers. These three methods are phone, email and live chat.

Live chat, to me, is the simplest way to resolve issues, and while many bookies have it available, it’s not yet ubiquitous among betting sites. OldGill do, meaning that you can reach out without having to pick up your phone or wait around, and can resolve an issue on the spot.

Email is a better option if you do not have the time to resolve things now – if you just want to send off your email and forget about it, for example. This would be pretty common for those, for example, in the middle of a work day – but don’t fret, we won’t tell the boss.

The third method is best if you prefer picking up the phone and speaking to somebody – maybe your powers of persuasion are a little more effective when you are actually on the phone.

Whichever your preferred method, the positive is that with OldGill, you have the choice. Of course, these choices are useless if the support agents are not able to help you, but with OldGill I have found them to be relatively responsive and generally more than able to assist.

Overall, the customer support platform available at OldGill is a good one. There are all three different contact methods available to you, live chat is available seven days a week, and importantly, the support agents are generally willing and able to help – at least in my experience.

FAQs About OldGill

Something that is a very slight black mark on the OldGill site – though certainly not a major one – is the fact that they do not have a Frequently Asked Questions section on the OldGill website. But not to worry, we’ve got that covered for you. Below, we answer some FAQs about this new betting site.

Is OldGill legit?

Ooh yeah. Would we review it if it wasn’t? OldGill is officially licensed and regulated by the Victorian Racing and Casino Control Commission, meaning that you can be confident they are an official, legitimate betting website.

Who owns OldGill?

OldGill was born when long-time rails bookie, Greg Engellener, launched it after he got a license with the aforementioned Victorian Racing and Casino Control Commission. He is its official owner.

Can I live stream on OldGill?

Unfortunately, at the time of writing there is no live streaming service available on BetGill.

Is it easy to verify my OldGill account?

Super easy. Let’s be honest, it’s never particularly difficult to verify a betting account – they want to make it as easy as possible for you to bet with them, after all. But some can be a little bit more time-consuming than others, and BetGill makes it about as easy as it can be.

How do I sign up with OldGill?

Like account verification, signing up with a betting site is generally really easy, and OldGill is no exception. Simply head to their website or download the app, click on the sign up button and fill in a few basic personal information and account details to get your account up and running.

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

So that’s it – everything that you could possibly need to know about OldGill in this detailed OldGill review. There is a lot about this betting site which is pretty standard fare for a betting site these days, particularly one using the BetCloud platform. But there are enough positives about this bookie to consider betting with them. As far as new betting sites go, they have very competitive odds and a decent but unspectacular range of markets, while an aesthetically pleasing website and functional mobile app add to their appeal. BetGill could improve by adding a few more payment methods and some additional features like live streaming, but overall, this is a really solid new betting platform, and if you’re looking for a new bookie, certainly one worth checking out.

An exciting new bookie with solid odds and a sleek design
