Whilst the ups and downs of every sport are inevitable, very few sports are as unforgiving as cricket.

The exposure of the game worldwide has left those at the sharp end of it travelling across the globe constantly, reaping the financial rewards of franchise cricket but perhaps losing their personal identity somewhat within it.

Glenn Maxwell is the latest player to take exile from the IPL, with Australian fans hopeful he will be fit for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

When it comes to global cricketing superstars, few can compete with Glenn Maxwell.
The Australian all-rounder has the ability to change any game with bat, ball and in the field and his larger-than-life persona has made him a global hero.

However, the saturation of global T20 cricket is taking its toll on many players, in terms of their physical and mental fitness and Maxwell is the latest player to take a break from the game, impacting on his stint in the Indian Premier League.

Marvelous Maxi

The fickle nature of cricket looks to be perfectly epitomised in Glenn Maxwell over the past 6 months, who has endured the full range of emotions that the sport has to offer.

In November 2023, Maxwell produced arguably the best World Cup innings of all time, smashing an unbeaten double century for Australia against Afghanistan, completing one of the greatest ever cricketing comebacks.

That knock ensured Australia progressed to the last 4 of the 2023 ODI World Cup, a competition that the Baggy Greens would go on to win.

IPL Struggles

Glenn Maxwell has long been part of the fabric in the IPL and he has been plying his trade for Royal Challengers Bengaluru since 2021.

RCB do remain one of the front runners for the 2024 IPL title with many cricketing betting sites but they will need to cope for the remainder of the season without Glenn Maxwell.

He has opted to leave the IPL for 2024, citing both physical and mental burnout as his reasons and the cricketing world will be fully behind him as he looks to return to full fitness.

Cricketing Chaos

Maxwell’s brave decision to step away from the IPL, comes soon after England captain Ben Stokes’ decision not to play in the T20 World Cup in June.

Franchise cricket is growing, with tournaments in the UK, Asia, South Africa, Australia, the Middle East and now the USA and many of the same players are playing in every competition.

The workload expected of cricketers in the modern age is huge and burnout from playing and travelling constantly is becoming a very prevalent issue.

Australian superstar Glenn Maxwell has opted to leave the 2024 edition of the IPL due to physical and mental burnout.

With the cricketing calendar continuing to expand, the workload on players is higher than ever and everybody will be hopeful that Maxwell makes a full recovery in time to represent Australia at the upcoming T20 World Cup.
