The race to be promoted from the Championship to the Premier League promises to be a memorable one

News Insights

  • 2016 EPL winners Leicester City were relegated in 2023.
  • The Foxes have been setting the standard in the Championship under Enzo Maresca.
  • However, recent results have brought other sides into contention.
  • Ipswich Town, Leeds United and Southampton are all firmly in automatic promotion contention.

The Leicester City Premier League win in 2016 remains one of the great sporting stories of all time and it remains revered by punters and international betting sites alike.

However, the Foxes struggled for form in 2022/23 and dropped down into the Championship but they are chasing an instant EPL return in 2024.

When it comes to competition, the English Premier League is the most fiercely contested division in world football and Leicester City are a club that has had experienced all of the highs and lows the EPL has to offer.

In 2016, Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes shocked the footballing world and stunned all betting sites, as they upset the odds to win the Premier League title.

European football and a FA Cup triumph followed in 2021 but Leicester ultimately couldn’t keep up with the pace in the Premier League and dropped back into the Championship.

Changing of the guard

The 2016 side that won the Premier League for Leicester City included some of the most iconic EPL players of recent times, with the likes of N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez propelling them to the unthinkable glory.

However, Leicester’s squad transition in the subsequent years has been significant, with the likes of James Maddison and Youri Tielemans proving to be hugely successful at the club.

Only club legend Jamie Vardy remains on the books since the 2016 EPL title win, and Leicester are relying on a new bunch of players to get them back into the big time.

Magical Maresca

Innovative coaches are often using the Championship to prove themselves in English football and Enzo Maresca is the latest football brain to follow that path.

Having been an integral part of the Pep Guardiola winning machine at Manchester City, Maresca swapped the Etihad to the King Power in the summer of 2023.

His impact has been marked, with the Foxes soaring up the table and playing some excellent football along the way, making them the front runners for Championship promotion with many football betting sites

Wrong time for a wobble

However, for all the plaudits that Leicester have rightfully been receiving this season, they look to be having a wobble at precisely the wrong time.

With just 1 win in their last 6 games, the Foxes have lost ground in the promotion race and their favouritism for promotion has come into question with a few betting sites.

Fellow Championship giants Leeds United, Ipswich Town and Southampton are all in the hunt for promotion and it should be a race that goes down to the wire once again in 2024.

Leicester City are one of the biggest draws in the Championship and they are looking to bounce back to the Premier League as quickly as possible.

Enzo Maresca’s side are enduring a blip at the wrong time for them, giving hope to some sides around them in the race to reach the Premier League next season.
