News Insights

  • First Bundesliga title for Bayer Leverkusen.
  • Leverkusen are enjoying an unbeaten campaign.
  • Xabi Alonso’s side are also in Europa League contention this term.
  • It is the first time since 2012 that Bayern Munich haven’t won the Bundesliga.

The Bundesliga had become a rather monotonous affair, with Bayern Munich having won the title every year for the past decade.

However, Bayer Leverkusen have upset the form book, surging to the top of the table under Xabi Alonso and they have finally broken their German top flight duck, much to the amazement of many punters and international betting sites

Whilst their status amongst German and European football fans has always been relatively secure, Bayer Leverkusen were always known as the team that had never won the league title.

120 years since their inception, Leverkusen had always been the bridesmaid, that is until Xabi Alonso came along, with the Spaniard changing their fortunes.

Alonso sits on the cusp of a spectacular campaign, with the Bundesliga title in the bag and the Europa League also a very distinct possibility this term, with a seismic double in the offing for all football punters and betting apps

No more Neverkusen

Whilst it was never a nickname meant with too much malice, Bayer Leverkusen had endured over a century without success in German football’s top flight.

However, the 2023/24 campaign had a very special feeling about it for Bayer Leverkusen and their fans and so it has proved to be.

Leverkusen have wrapped up their maiden Bundesliga title, with 4 games to spare and have remarkably gone unbeaten throughout the campaign.

Doubling up

How ironic it would be if Bayer Leverkusen did manage to add the Europa League to their Bundesliga title this term, having waited so long for silverware.

Leverkusen have a healthy 2-0 lead over Europa Conference League holders West Ham United heading into the second leg, with the semifinals beckoning.

With English behemoths Liverpool behind the 8-ball in their quarter final tie against Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen are now the favourites for the Europa League title with many betting sites

Xabi’s X-factor

For all the huge successes enjoyed at Bayer Leverkusen this season, the news that Xabi Alonso is set to stay at the club is arguably the biggest coup of all.

With Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool and Thomas Tuchel departing Bayern Munich at the end of the season, Alonso’s future at Leverkusen has long been speculated over.

However, he has signaled his intent to stay at Leverkusen beyond the 2024 campaign and who knows how far he and the club could go in the future.

Xabi Alonso has been a revelation at Bayer Leverkusen and the Spaniard, and his side are celebrating their long overdue Bundesliga title.

A Bundesliga and Europa League double remains on for Leverkusen in 2024 and with Alonso’s long-term future secured, could it be the start of something special at the Bay Arena?
