Jockey Teo Nugent set to return after injury lay-off

The perils and dangers on display in every horse race are apparent on a regular basis and Teo Nugent felt the full brunt of it when suffering an awful fall at The Valley in March 2023.
Six months on, Nugent has made a strong recovery from his neck fracture, and he looks set to saddle up once more in October, ahead of one of the busiest periods of the season. 

Whilst it is an element of the Australian and international horse racing schedule that is often overlooked by bookmakers and punters, the welfare of horses and jockeys is always on a knife edge in a horse race.

On 18th March at The Valley, rising star jockey Teo Nugent suffered a terrible fall when on board Fluorescent Star – a tumble that caused Nugent to fracture vertebrae in his neck and for the horse to be humanly euthanised.

The resilience of Nugent however in the past 6 months has been testament to his dedication within the sport and he is set to return to action, something both punters and Aussie bookmakers will be keeping an eye on.

Learning his craft

In the aftermath of his horrific fall at The Valley, there were plenty of horse racing experts and pundits that were happy to jump on board Teo Nugent and criticise his role in the incident.

With the heartbreaking news that his ride Fluorescent Star had to be put down, compounding his terrible injuries, the whole experience has been a steep learning curve for Nugent.

Hit with a 37-meeting suspension, the lawmakers in the Australian racing world attributed full responsibility of the incident to Nugent – who is clearly still honing his skills at this level, and he will be eager to prove his worth on his return to action.

A prestigious talent

With the likes of Damien Oliver and Frankie Dettori still riding successfully in Australia and beyond, well into their 50’s, Teo Nugent will believe he has a huge future ahead of him.

Aged 24 at the time of the fall and now 25, Nugent’s youth and exuberance could have been attributed to his injuries at The Valley, but it will have also assisted with intense bouts of rehab.

A Group 1 winner at the age of just 22, Nugent has long been tipped for a huge future in Australian racing and his presence has also been recognised by plenty of international betting sites too.

Picking up where he left off will be the key aim for Nugent, as he looks to continue to fulfill his reputation as one of the best young Australian jockeys in the business.

Big races on the horizon

Clearly for Nugent and connections, the timing of his injuries were far from ideal, but they did give him an obvious period of rehab and a recovery goal.

Having won the C S Hayes Cup just days before his horror injury, Nugent’s calibre at Group 1 level is unquestioned and he will have been targeting big races in October and November as key motivation in his time off.

Currently, Nugent hasn’t been booked for rides in the Breeders Cup or Melbourne Cup, with owners often keeping their cards close to their chest at this time of year but Nugent will be out to prove his worth to all of the decision makers in the game.

Returning to action at Flemington on October 9th will be a welcome sight for Nugent’s admirers and he will be hoping to pick up where he left off and ride himself into Group 1 consideration during the latter part of the 2023/24 Australian horse racing season.

With 6 months of rehab in the bank, Nugent will be desperate to get back out on the track and he looks set to make his return in October, with plenty of big races on the horizon.
