Saturday Racing Tips - Caulfield 27/04/24

Caulfield is set to play its part in another huge day of Autumn racing.

By the time that race 6 swings along, there will be plenty of awareness amongst the betting ring as to how the ground is faring, with plenty of rain having fallen at Caulfield of late. The Platinum Guineas promises to be an excellent contest whatever the weather though and with half a million dollars in the prize pot, there is plenty of interest out there for both punters and Aussie bookmakers.

The mile trip here at Caulfield promises to be the perfect distance for some of the fastest 3-year-olds in Australia currently and there are plenty of horses that hold genuine hopes in this one. 

Topping the betting is Modown, a prolific flyer for the Littlefield clan, who seems to be revelling in esteemed company of late. With places in each of its last 3 runs, Modown is the standout offering in a congested betting pool and it could be a tough horse to stop at $3.00 with Playup. 

Quality horses assemble in behind in the betting, with Elphinstone another seriously strong horse for the McEvoy training duo and this should be a race that is the perfect fit for a horse of this nature. Inevitably, this is a step up in class, which is the biggest question mark, but Elphinstone looks to be worth a decent shout at a very appealing $3.50 with Bet365. 

From there on in it is a real buffet for punters, with so many different horses laying down claims to win this race and the likes of Socks Nation and Hey Bella are both lightly raced horses, that could be ready to make statement wins here at $5.50 and $34.00 respectively with Punterspal.  

The showcase race of the day at Caulfield is the Platinum Showdown Stakes in race 8, with a very cool A$1 million up for grabs for punters with both old and new betting sites alike. Big names owners, trainers and jockeys are all lining up for a piece of the pie here, as some of the best young horses in Australia go at it.

With a very healthy prize pot on offer and some super speedy 2-year-olds battling it out over 1200m, the drama looks to be guaranteed for both punters and Aussie bookmakers alike in the 2024 edition of the Platinum Showdown. 

This is race that has proved to be a springboard for horses to kick on and do big things previously, and Bold Bastille looks to fit that criterion perfectly heading into this race. Having won 4 of 5 career outings, Bold Bastille has looked the business throughout its fledgling career for the Hayes clan and this race has been earmarked for a while. Nothing can stop Bold Bastille here and it looks to be a virtual shoe-in at $1.70 with Punterspal.  

The only other horse that can be backed at a single figure price here is Lincolnshire, a horse that blew away the competition in its only career outing so far and who looks to be the real unknown quantity in this race at $6.50 with Playup. 

Beyond those two high flyers in the betting, both Cosmic Ride and Linkvue come from excellent stock but with not many races to go off, they both look to be a gamble of sorts at $11.00 and $14.00 respectively with Bet365. 

The penultimate race of the day at Caulfield is another whopper, with the Cylinder Vobis Gold Dash offering up a A$175,000 prize pot for the best horses around to battle it out for. Another eclectic mix of 3-year-olds assemble for this one and with some big-name trainers in contention, this could be compelling viewing.

The uncertainty around a race such as this, from both the perspective of both punter and bookmaker makes it an absolute must bet, with seemingly any horse in the contest capable of crossing the line first. 

Topping the betting is Hedged, a 3-year-old who has bagged 3 wins from 8 career starts and who is starting to string some sort of consistency together in terms of both performance level and results. It isn’t a forgone conclusion but Hedged looks to be a very good horse, capable of bigger things and it could be worth a go at $2.00 with Bet365. 

Moby Dick is the next offering in the betting, a horse that has been in very good form for the Price clan, since its debut earlier in the season. The step up in quality is the key question here but Moby Dick could run very well at an enticing $3.60 with Playup. 

Longer shots form in the likes of Acid Wash and Celui but the aforementioned two at the top of the betting are the ones to beat for the win, but they could both sneak into place contention here at $13.00 and $14.00 respectively with Punterspal.
