Race 1
The Victoria Gold Cup is the opening race on the card at Caulfield on Saturday and it promises to be a contest that all punters and Aussie bookmakers will be looking to get their teeth into. Ran over 2000m, this should be a stern test for all in the field and there are some excellent horses in the running.
Victoria Gold Cup
There is a hugely international feel to the Victoria Gold Cup here, with 7 of the 8 entrants in the contest coming from overseas. With the UK, France, Ireland, Chile, and New Zealand represented, this should be a superb opener to a top day of racing at Caulfield, with A$175k on the line.
The horse to beat in the betting ring is Carini, a French flyer of serious repute, who has picked up race wins all over the world and who is now being thrust into the world of Australian racing. Conditions are expected to suit and with Damien Lane on board, Carini is in safe hands, making it the short odds favourite for this one at $2.05 with Playup.
The sole home hope for this race is Muramasa, an exciting 4 year old who has struggled in its last couple of races but who set the world alight before that. With big wins in the bag, punters will always be hoping a horse like Muramasa can find form once again and what better place to do it than here at Caulfield at $5.10 with Bet365.
Elsewhere, Irish flyer Mankayan and Kiwi chance Captain Envious are also firmly in contention, with both horses having put miles in the legs this season and they should both be in the hunt at $5.60 and $6.50 respectively with Punterspal.
Race 8
One of the biggest prize pots of the year is up for grabs at Caulfield this weekend, with the All Star Mile on the agenda for punters and both old and new betting sites alike. With A$3.75 million in the prize pot and A$2 million of that going to the winner, this should be a bumper contest at Caulfield.
All Star Mile
Whilst it isn’t a Group 1 race, the quality of this contest is instantly obvious to all punters and Aussie bookmakers with just a quick glance down the card and it should be frenetic over the 1600m trip.
Arguably the form horse of Australian racing currently, Mr Brightside, is the favourite for this one and it looks hard to bet against him. Having placed in all of his last 8 starts in either 1st or 2nd, Mr Brightside looks to be a horse in his pomp and whilst this is a tough assignment, he is the clear and obvious favourite here at $1.75 with Punterspal.
Key competition for this one comes in the form of Pride of Jenni, a Ciaron Maher trained flyer who looks ready to make an assault on big races such as this. Surpassing Mr Brightside may be a tall order but Pride of Jenni is a seriously gutsy horse who could surprise a few people here at $4.05 with Playup.
Elsewhere, two horses that know what it takes to win big races are in the mix, with both Cascadian and Ayrton next in the betting and both are worth keeping an eye on at $13.00 and $17.00 respectively with Bet365.
Race 9
The penultimate race of the day at Caulfield is a curious one, with many horses in need of a career win lining up here. Ran over 1600m, this handicap contest should be well fought, with some excellent trainers and jockeys in the mix too and it will be the perfect come down following the chaos of the All-Star Mile before it.
Country Mile Series Final
There is a quarter of a million dollars in the prize fund here, making the contest a very healthy one for a BM80 handicap and there are lots of horses that will be looking to make their mark here.
Topping the early betting is Sir Atlas, an Irish horse with a fierce reputation and with some excellent runs under its belt in recent times. Whether it can step up in a contest such as this remains to be seen but the stock is good and it is the favourite for this one at $4.80 with Bet365.
Next up in the betting ring is Dashing Duchess, a Kiwi horse that knows how to win races, having triumphed in 3 of her 5 career starts and whilst this is a step up in quality, Dashing Duchess does look to have the credentials to win a race like this and can be backed at a healthy $5.50 with Playup.
There is plenty of value to be found in the remainder of the field and both Hasseltoff and Saint Lazare look to have what it takes to challenge here and both of them could enjoy a good run in this one at $14.00 and $16.00 respectively with Punterspal.
