Saturday Racing Tips - Aurie’s Star Handicap 05/08/23

Dating back to 1996, the Aurie’s Star Handicap is one of the staples on the Australian racing calendar. Named after the infamous Aurie Star, a prolific race winner back in the 1930’s and 1940’s, the Group 3 race takes place over 1200 meters with a total prize pot of A$200,000.

With the likes of Hey Doc, Mic Mac, and Fields of Omagh all having won the Aurie’s Star Handicap previously, the prestige of the race at Flemington speaks for itself.

Race 1: BM70 Handicap

Kicking off proceedings at Flemington on Saturday is the BM70 Handicap, which has plenty of decent horses in the mix. Ran over 1100m, it should be a short and sharp battle, with a solid blend of youth and experience in the field, from owners, jockeys, and horses.

River Noire is the most exciting prospect in this race, with the lightly raced 4-year-old having won 2 of its previous three outings. Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman have put Luke Nolen on board, testament to what they think of the horse and at $3.00, it is a firm favourite with Bet365.

Track experience often plays a part at Flemington and Jean Valjean has plenty of it under Will Clarken & Niki O'Shea. Winning over a similar distance just 3 weeks ago is a good omen, and it looks sure to be in the mix at $4.60 with Playup.

The quality of the race is firmly underlined by the next two horses in the betting, with both Smile and Wave and The Hass having picked up notable wins over the years, making them serious candidates for this one.

Going off at $7.50 and $8.00 respectively, both Smile and Wave and The Hass could well be in the mix with Punterspal.

Race 4: Mares BM84 Handicap

The packed card at Flemington on Saturday continues to catch the eye, with the Mares BM84 Handicap, which also has a stellar field collated. Arguably the most open race of the day, plenty of betting opportunities are presented to punters but inevitably, that also does carry a certain amount of risk.

The early market leader is Fearnought, with the 5-year-old coming into this one fresh off the back of a big win at Randwick. With the distance similar and the familiarity of Blake Shinn on board, it could be well in the mix at $5.50 with Punterspal.

How open the race is shows in the next two picks in the betting, with long odds being served up throughout the card. Beour Bay is a horse that has placed in its last 6 outings, with three wins to boot too and it looks to be a serious front runner here at $7.00 with Playup. Cuban Link tells a similar story, having also placed in its last three runs and the Greg Eurell trained 5-year-old should also be one to keep an eye on at a healthy $9.00 with Bet365.

The aforementioned openness of the field is reflected in the betting beyond the favourites, with Queen Air ($9), Hell Hound ($10) and La Vina ($14) all horses that have performed and won at this level previously. (Above prices with Bet365).

Race 7: Aurie’s Star Handicap

All eyes will once again be on Flemington on Saturday, as the Aurie’s Star Handicap takes centre stage. The 1200m dash is always a good yard stick for owners and trainers and there are plenty of strong 3-year-olds in the mix for a solid chunk of the A$200,000 prize.

Benedetta heads up the betting coming into this one, with the Jason Warren trained 4-year-old winning in style at Flemington in the Inglis Sprint back in March. Conditions should suit too, and it looks to be the horse to beat at $3.20 with Bet365.

One to watch in a race with plenty of candidates is Ingratiating, with the 5-year-ols James Cummings horse catching the eye in winning at Caulfield in July. Pace would be a question mark but if it gets a good run, it will certainly be in contention here at $5.50 with Playup.

Finishing second behind Ingratiating that day was General Beau, a horse that many people felt was a tad unfortunate to do so at Caulfield. Another horse from racing stock at the Matthew Ellerton yard, General Beau looks to be a good price here at $7.00 with Punterspal.

Elsewhere, Dance to Dubai won well at Flemington last time out and could be in the mix at $23, whilst Chassis and Umgawa have decent outside shots to win the race at $26 and $31 respectively (all with Bet365).
