Race 6: Coolmore Stud Stakes

Group 1 racing at Flemington always shakes something in the waters of punters and Aussie bookmakers alike and the Coolmore Stud Stakes promises to be a fascinating contest in race 6.

Raced over 1200m, the Coolmore Stud Stakes should be a fast and furious dash, with a rather enticing A$2 million in the prize pot, for some of the fastest 3-year-olds in the country.

Coolmore Stud Stakes

The 19-strong field in the Coolmore Stud Stakes is a timely reminder of the strength in the Australian sprint racing community currently and there are a whole host of big names who are in with a chance in this one.

James Cummings is a trainer who always has his act together by the time the Melbourne Festival at Flemington comes around and his flyer Cylinder is topping the market for this one.

A horse with a fantastic track record for a 3-year-old, it looks set to go on to bigger and better things and putting in a big performance here at the Melbourne Festival would exemplify progress.

Whilst the field in the Coolmore Stud Stakes is strong, Cylinder is the rightful favourite for this one at $3.00 with Playup

They are queuing up behind Cylinder in this one, with plenty of speedy horses more than in the mix. Key competition looks to come in the form of Shinzo, James McDonald’s chosen ride for this one and another horse with a seemingly big future ahead of it for trainer Chris Waller.

A couple of poor showings over the past two outings have raised some slight concerns but Shinzo is a classy operator, who shouldn’t be too far away in this one at $7.00 with Bet365

The quality of the field is exemplified by the other options on the card, with King’s Gambit and Steparty two seriously good horses that also find themselves in contention. Both horses possess 100% career placing records and have pace to burn, making them serious candidates if things go their way at $8.00 and $11.00 respectively with Punterspal.

Race 7: Victoria Derby

The Group 1 contests just keep on coming at Flemington on Saturday, with the Victoria Derby the next big race to attract the interests of both old and new betting sites alike. A race that dates back over 100 years, the Victoria Derby is a real test of stamina for plenty of horses in the field over 2500m and should be another enthralling contest in 2023.

In addition to the prestige of the race, getting involved with the A$2 prize pot will be the ultimate objective for every owner and trainer in the race and it promises to be fascinating viewing.

Victoria Derby

Some of the most exciting stayers in Australian racing find themselves in the mix for the 2023 Victoria Derby and for many of the 3-year-olds in the field, the lack of experience over this distance could be the decisive factor.

Topping the betting is the well fancied Riff Rocket, a horse that has seriously been doing the business for Chris Waller and is tipped to have a very bright future ahead of it.

James McDonald will be in the saddle, another tick in the box for most punters and it looks to be one of the best bets of the day at $2.00 with Punterspal.

Key competition for this one looks to come in the form of Apulia, a horse that has really come of age of late and seems ideal for this longer trip. Usurping Riff Rocket would be a seismic achievement, but Apulia is certainly in with a decent shot at $4.00 with Playup

Whilst the market does start to become stretched out after the top two in the betting, there are a fair few horses that should have a chance here. Both Verdad and Sunsets have good racing records over similar distances, and they should be in the mix at $8.00 and $15.00 respectively with Bet365

Race 8: Empire Rose Stakes

One of the more open races on the 9-contest card is the Empire Rose Stakes in race 8. Yet another Group 1 contest, the Empire Rose Stakes is another race that has nurtured some of the most exciting racing talent in Australia in recent years and that looks set to be the same in 2023.

Empire Rose Stakes

Ran over 1600m, the Empire Rose Stakes is a strong test of both speed and stamina for the field and with $1 million within the prize fund, it will be another hotly contested race at Flemington.

There is plenty of experience in the field in the 2023 Empire Rose Stakes, but it is perhaps Alcohol Free that stands out to punters, with over A$3 of career prize money bagged. A 4th place at Royal Randwick in The Invitation last time out was a decent showing but this should be more suitable here at Flemington and it is certainly one to keep an eye on at $5.00 with Bet365

Kiwi flyer Atishu is next in a congested betting ring, with recent runs perhaps the only negative punters could find for this horse. A proven performer at this level, especially over both course and distance and there is hope that a return to familiar surrounds could be the answer here for Atishu at $5.50 with Playup

Two prolific performers in recent weeks are next in the betting for the Empire Rose Stakes, with Princess Grace and Wishlor Lass having produced some superb runs of late. A change in distance could be the differential for both horses here but neither should be discarded at $8.50 apiece with Punterspal.
