Saturday Racing Tips - Ascot 02/12/23

The Winterbottom Stakes is the key draw at Ascot this weekend, with another frenetic day of racing catching the attention of Aussie bookmakers and punters alike.

As the card at Ascot begins to hot up and intensify on Saturday 2nd December, the Sir Ernest Lee Steere Classic in race 7 promises to be a real battle. With a blend of youth and experience in the paddock, it is a tough one to call but there is plenty to get on board with the biggest and best Aussie bookmakers.

With A$125,000 in the prize pot, there is plenty at stake here in this 1400m contest and it should be a thriller for the neutral here at Ascot. 

Sir Ernest Lee Steere Classic

The quality of this contest is exemplified by the calibre of horses and connections in the Sir Ernest Lee Steere Classic and it should be a race to remember.

Topping the betting is Kiwi flyer Augment, a horse that has long been tipped for great things and recent results certainly suggest it is trending in the right direction.

Finishing 3rd at Ascot last time out, with plenty in the tank over 1200m suggested that a slightly longer distance may suit better and with Paul Carbery on board, backers have every reason to be confident.

It won’t be a procession but Augment is the justified favourite here at $2.60 with Playup.
The Parnham’s are prolific when it comes to Western Australian racing and they will be looking to challenge with their selection in this race, Investmentstrategy. Whilst recent showings haven’t pulled up too many trees, all connected with the horse tend to know when to push the form at Ascot in particular and it should run a good one here at $4.60 with Bet365.

Writing off any of the other horses in this contest wouldn’t be too wise, with plenty in with a shout and both Stormchaser and Generosity have serious credentials over the 1400m trip.

Both horses have experience of racing here at Ascot and they are very capable of picking up a win at $5.50 and $8.00 respectively with Punterspal. 

Next on the card is the Jungle Dawn Classic in race 8, a 1400m dash with plenty of exciting prospects in the field. Another cool A$125,000 is on offer for the winner and connections and with plenty of big names in the running, both old and new betting sites are getting on board with this one.

By the time the 8th race of the day from Ascot comes around, there should be a strong idea amongst the field as to how the course is running and it should be a very good contest in the Jungle Dawn Classic.

Jungle Dawn Classic

Another stellar field has assembled for the Jungle Dawn Classic with some of the best horses from both Western Australia and the wider nation assembling, all seeking a share of the healthy prize fund.

Topping the betting is the Duchess of Gossip, a horse that is more than proven at this level and one that looks to be at the very peak of its powers currently.

Coming into this one with 3 wins from its last 4 starts, half of which have been at Ascot the only question mark looks to be over the trip but signs have suggested it could adapt well to the longer 1400m distance. 

It won’t be one-way traffic, but the Duchess of Gossip looks to be the one to beat in this one at $2.90 with Punterspal. 

Next in the betting is another horse that enjoys running at Ascot in Rusty Dreams. Whilst the last three outings have been a little underwhelming, Rusty Dreams comes from serious stock and it should be in a good position to challenge from the outset here and it looks to represent decent value in the betting market at $4.20 with Playup.

There are plenty of other horses in with a shout beyond the top two in the betting too, with both Amber Glide and Baby Paris having very good track records, over both course and distance. This could be a lottery of a race and both horse look to be worth keeping an eye on at $6.50 and $9.00 respectively with Bet365.

With plenty of excellent races on the card at Ascot, punters have lots to work with this weekend, but it is the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes that is the key attraction from Ascot on Saturday.

With A$1.5 million in the prize pool, all of the biggest names in Western Australian racing will be battling it out to etch their name into racing folklore at Ascot on 2nd December 2023. 

Winterbottom Stakes

As 2023 draws to an end, the Group 1 contests from Ascot come thick and fast and the Winterbottom Stakes remains one of the biggest races in Australia and it is a staple on the racing calendar. 

The horse to beat in the betting is Overpass, a well-versed 5-year-old who has very little to prove at this level but of course, winning big races such as this are always a real feather in the cap. Recent showings in more esteemed company than this have been a little underwhelming, but Overpass is an excellent horse, who is the favourite for this one for a reason and it will take some stopping at $3.10 with Bet365.

One horse that does look capable of obstructing Overpass is Ripcord, a Western Australian flyer that is catching the eye in every race it lines up in. A superb win over course and distance at Ascot just a couple of weeks ago will give all associated with Ripcord confidence it can compete here, and it looks to be the wild card pick for this one at $6.50 with Playup.

Next up in the betting are two more horses from excellent stock in Triple Missile and Oscar’s Fortune. With both horses seeking big purses all around Australia this year, a return to familiar surrounds may suit and they could both be potential frontrunners at $7.00 and $10.00 respectively with Punterspal.
