2024 Melbourne Cup field beginning to assemble

The turning of the calendar piques the interest of all punters and online betting platforms, as it means the biggest races in Australia are ready to roll around once more.

Without A Fight to win again? 

The 2023 Melbourne Cup was an incredible occasion at Flemington once more and it was Without A Fight who came out on top in the infamous Victorian contest. 
 
With Marc Zahra on board, it was dominant performance for the Anthony and Sam Freedman trained flyer, who was victorious at odds of around $8.00. 
 
As ever, in the ante-post betting markets, the winner from the previous year is seen to be the benchmark and with over 10 months to go, Without A Fight does look to be the horse to beat again in the 2024 installment of the Melbourne Cup but there is plenty of racing to be done between now and then. 
 
Willie Mullins to break his duck? 

Heading into the 2023 staging of the Melbourne Cup, much of the narrative with online betting sites was surrounded around how Willie Mullins was ready to win his first ever Melbourne Cup. 
 
The legendary Irish trainer has long been vocal of his desire to win the Melbourne Cup and in Vauban, he looked to have a course capable of both lasting the 3200m trip at Flemington and having the necessary turn of speed when it matters. 
 
However, for Mullins and Vauban it wasn’t to be and the wait for a Melbourne Cup at the Gigginstown stable continues. 
 
2024 will inevitably present another opportunity and betting against any Willie Mullins horse always seems a risky ploy in races such as these. 
 
Big year ahead for many 

The Melbourne Cup is of course the pinnacle for every racing enthusiast in Australia and there are plenty of horses that will be looking to peak when it matters. 
 
2023 runner up Soulcombe has long been seen as a serious candidate in this race and its performance this year is only going to give connections hope heading into 2024. 
 
Whether it can sustain form and be in good nick when the Melbourne Festival rolls around will be the key question. 
 
Two horses that have been in fine fettle in recent times are Zardozi and Riff Rocket and plenty is expected from them in 2024 and they too could find themselves firmly in Melbourne Cup contention if things go their way.

With the dust still settling on Without A Fight’s win in the 2023 Melbourne Cup, the 2024 edition of the race has snuck onto the agenda.
