Championship football beckons for Sheffield United.

Will Sheffield United break the Premier League goals conceded record?

News Insights

  • Sheffield United are cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier League.
  • The Blades have conceded 72 goals in just 27 games.
  • Swindon Town hold the record, conceding 100 goals in the inaugural EPL season.
  • Sheffield United are 11 points from Premier League safety.

Following the euphoria of promotion to the Premier League last year, Sheffield United have quickly found themselves in freefall.

Bramall Lane has previously been a very difficult place to go, with many punters and EPL betting sites often seeing it as a tough assignment for the big teams.

However, the Blades have been poor this season, with their route back down to the Championship all but secured already.

Defensive issues

Both Chris Wilder and his predecessor Paul Heckingbottom have seriously struggled to fill the defensive gaps at Sheffield United.

Conceding 72 goals in 27 games is an average of over 2.5 per fixture and in the Premier League, that type of defensive record is simply unsustainable.

Goalkeepers have been chopped and changed, whilst injuries to the likes of George Baldock and John Egan have hurt their cause but the Blades have been a banker team to bet against this season with many EPL betting sites.

Blunt Blades

For all the justified talk of the number of goals they have conceded, Sheffield United have hardly been banging the goals in at the opposite end of the pitch either.

Just 22 goals scored in 27 games is representative of their struggles in attacking areas and they look to be a side bereft of confidence.

Ben Brereton-Diaz and Jams McAtee are tasked with plenty of the creative industry but with Rhian Brewster and Oli McBurnie out of form alongside them, it has been a tough campaign for the Blades.

A place in the record books?

Conceding 72 goals in 27 games is a clear and obvious red flag surrounding Sheffield United and this season could become even more memorable – for all the wrong reasons.

Swindon Town conceded 100 goals in their 1993/94 Premier League campaign, a record that still stands today.

Sheffield United would need to concede more than 28 goals in their next 11 games but with 16 conceded in their last 3 home games, they need to buck their ideas up pretty quickly, to avoid being etched into EPL folklore.
