Big Bash heroes make up Australian ODI squad.

Key names from BBL 13 force their way into Australian ODI squad

News Insights

  • World One-Day champions Australia take on West Indies in 3-game series.
  • Plenty of BBL 13 stars feature in 13-man squad.
  • Sydney Sixers Steve Smith is set to captain the side.
  • Usual captain Pat Cummins has been rested and Marcus Stoinis is the biggest name absentee.

Such is the prestige that performances within the BBL are held in, that consistent showings in the competition can warrant international recognition.

Having upset the form book in India with many online betting sites, Australia became the ICC ODI World Champions in November 2023.

Next up for the world champs is the visit of the West Indies, who are in Australia for both a Test series and a 3-game ODI contest.

Form within the Big Bash has been deemed as key to selectors and plenty of the top performers have been called up to the most recent ODI squad.

Short to take chance?

The leading run scorer in BBL 13 by some distance is Matt Short and the Adelaide Strikers opener has once again been rewarded for his form.

With Daivd Warner stepping away from international cricket and Mitchell Marsh having been rested for this series, Matt Short looks set to get a good go at the top of the order.

Having some part-time off spin in the armoury too is a tick in the box for Short, who has been at the forefront of run-scoring in the BBL for the past few seasons.

New look bowling attack

Few pundits or betting sites would be in a position to argue that Australia have the most fearsome bowling attacks in the world.

Led by the talismanic Pat Cummins, and with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in tow, all three bowlers are prolific across all three disciplines in world cricket.

However, this series against the West Indies gives new players a chance to stake their claim and plenty of BBL stars are in the mix.

Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis once again find themselves in the international shakeup after solid BBL’s, whilst the emergence of Lance Morris is a very exciting one for Australian seam bowling.

Hardie gets his chance

Over the past couple of seasons in Big Bash cricket, the Perth Scorchers have been by far the dominant force.

Winning the competition in both 2022 and 2023, the Scorchers are well in the hunt again in 2024 and stand-in captain Aaron Hardie has been a huge part of that.

Whilst regular captain Ashton Turner has been a miss for the Scorchers, Hardie has proven to be an able deputy, with his weight of runs forcing him into the national team fold too.

Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Steve Smith will all take some usurping in this successful Australian side, but Aaron Hardie will be out to take any chances that come his way.
