AFL 2024 Round 2

It was an opening weekend to remember in the 2024 AFL, with many big sides suffering shock defeats and it looks to be a very open and engaging campaign ahead for all punters and AFL betting sites

The GWS Giants are the early season pacesetters, whilst the likes of Sydney, Gold Coast and Carlton all have two wins from their opening 2 games.

St Kilda vs Collingwood

Two old foes with no love lost between them meet at Marvel Stadium, as St Kilda welcome defending champions Collingwood, who’s relative plight has been well documented by many punters and AFL betting sites.

A tight opening defeat to Geelong was not what St Kilda were looking for last time out but they did show glimpses of some decent footy and they will want to have a good crack at the Magpies here. Collingwood meanwhile have been well beaten by both Sydney and the GWS Giants and they know that the whole of the AFL will be watching them intently here. This will be a good one, with Collingwood likely to get off the mark for the season.

Hoskin-Elliott.

Adelaide vs Geelong

Adelaide will be looking to pick up their first points of the campaign, as they welcome Geelong to South Australia. For Adelaide, remaining in top 8 contention looks to be their ultimate objective for the campaign but they were edged out by Gold Coast last weekend, in what was an underwhelming attacking display. Meanwhile, Geelong didn’t hit their straps in forward areas against St Kilda last weekend but did enough defensively and they will want more of the same on the road here. This is one of the toughest games to call of the weekend, but Adelaide are good at home, and they should prevail here.

North Melbourne vs Fremantle

Two sides that could be in the wooden spoon shakeup this season do battle at Marvel Stadium, as North Melbourne take on Fremantle. Neither side is expected to pull up too many trees this season with big nor small betting sites and there could be a cagey atmosphere to this tie. North Melbourne’s struggles have been continuing for over 12 months and they need a confidence boost, but Fremantle won’t be up for giving them one here and this could be a chastening away win.

Hawthorn vs Melbourne

Melbourne picked up an impressive win over the Western Bulldogs last weekend and they look to be gathering momentum with many AFL betting sites and they travel to Hawthorn next. For the hosts, getting off their duck this season will be the aim, following an underwhelming start to the campaign and they will want to put on a performance for their home fans. However, Melbourne are a tough nut to crack, who should be ready to fire on the road and pick up their 2nd win of the season.

Sydney vs Essendon

There is some serious belief building at the SCG that the Sydney Swans could enjoy a successful season and Essendon are the next visitors to town. The Swans have won both of their opening games and look to be a side firmly in contention for AFL glory this season. Meanwhile, Essendon look to have work to do if they are to crack the top 8 and they seem to be a side in transition currently. This should be a closer one than the odds suggest but Sydney are doing very well at home, and they should prevail here.

Western Bulldogs vs Gold Coast

Two wins from two played is the record that Gold Coast take to the Western Bulldogs this weekend, in what should be an absolute classic. The Bulldogs were hammered unceremoniously by Melbourne last weekend and need to put in a shift here, against an unbeaten Gold Coast side. Conjecture surrounding Gold Coast is growing with all AFL betting sites and they seem ready to fire, making them the good value shout to pick up an important win on their travels here.

Richmond vs Port Adelaide

It has been a turgid start to the campaign for Richmond, who have lost both of their opening games, and they know they have a task on their hands here against Port Adelaide. The fixture list hasn’t been too kind to Richmond, but they will be eager to snap their losing streak as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, Port Adelaide were hugely impressive in 2023 and they will want to showcase that form again in 2024, as they chase a Premiership title. This will be a tight one, with Port Adelaide looking good value to get it done on their travels.

West Coast vs GWS Giants

It may be early days in the 2024 AFL campaign, but it is top vs bottom in the table this weekend, as the high-flying GWS Giants travel to the West Coast Eagles. For West Coast, picking up any sort of result in any game is their ultimate aim and they look to be leading the wooden spoon conversation again in 2024. Meanwhile, the GWS Giants are the form side in the AFL and who knows how far they can go this season. This should be a whopping win on the road for the supremely confident GWS Giants.
