Liverpool and England legend Jordan Henderson shocked many punters and international betting sites in the summer of 2023, by heading to Al Effitaq in Saudi Arabia.
Joining forces with Steven Gerrard, the move initially looked to make sense but 6 months on, Henderson has returned to Europe to join Ajax.

Having joined the club back in 2011, Henderson lifted the Champions League trophy in 2019 before backing it up in 2020 with the Premier League title – the first for Liverpool in 30 years.
A key part of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup triumphs in 2022 too, Jordan Henderson left the club in the summer of 2023 – having played almost 500 games for Liverpool and having won 7 trophies.
Saudi criticism
For all of the sporting happenings in Saudi Arabia, the question marks around some of the human rights rulings in the country continue to linger.
During his time at Liverpool, Jordan Henderson was an outspoken supporter of inclusivity and minority groups, often to much acclaim.
Moving to Saudi Arabia was seen by many as disrespectful by Henderson, who apologised for any offence caused by his move to Saudi Arabia, always citing it as a football decision, more than a financial one.
Ajax adventure
2024 does however present an opportunity for Jordan Henderson to move forwards in his career and he has moved to a European behemoth in Ajax.
Sat in 5th in the Eredivisie table and with a Europa Conference League campaign to manage too, there is plenty to play for in Amsterdam this season and Henderson will be a big part of that.
In addition, he knows all too well that consistent performances in the Dutch capital could secure him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad at Euro 2024.
