We’re into the business end of the Australian Open now, with the final two men’s quarter-finals playing out on Wednesday. With Hubert Hurkacz taking on Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz squaring off against Alexander Zverev, we outline how to potentially make a seven-fold return with some multi betting on these matches.

Considering this is a quarter-final between the number three and nine seeds, betting sites are offering some brilliant odds on this clash. One of the best markets we’ve identified is betting on Medvedev to win, but Hurkacz to pick up a set along the way.

Medvedev is one of the best hard-court players in the world. The Russian has a Grand Slam title under his belt and has consistently been in and around the world’s top three the past two years. Two times he’s made the final of the Australian Open, and is looking a great chance of doing so again this year.

Hurkacz, on the other hand, is coming off a finish to 2023 that saw him win a second Masters 1000 title. The Pole is serving better than ever and has had the better of Medvedev in their past two meetings. However, Hurkacz has only ever made it beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam once in 22 main draw appearances.

Given Medvedev’s overall credentials and the weight of the occasion, we say it’s highly likely that he wins on Wednesday. However, the pair’s recent head-to-head and his opponent’s strong form mean there’s a very good chance Hurkacz will get at least a set in this one.

The odds on this clash are just too juicy, we’ve got to dip back in for another bet on Hurkacz vs Medvedev.  

Anyone that has watched Hurkacz play for a minute will know his approach to a tennis match: hold serve and win the set in a breaker. The 26-year-old played a whopping 62 tiebreaks in 2023, more than any other top 50 player on the ATP Tour. Already this Australian Open he’s played five. 

For Medvedev, he’s not an ultra-aggressive breaker of serve either. While the Russian may be a little less extreme than Hurkacz, his game is also built heavily around holding serve and grinding from the baseline.  

The beauty of this bet is that it doesn’t require the set to go to a tiebreaker to get paid. 6-4, 7-5 and 7-6 will all make this bet. For Hurkacz this tournament, eight of the 15 sets he’s played have gone over 9.5 games, while Medvedev is at eight of 16. Considering these numbers were accrued against lower ranked opponents, the chances of a tight opening set between these two is very high.

The last time Alcaraz and Zverev met in a Grand Slam, it was the quarter-finals of the 2023 US Open. Zverev came into the match off the back of a gruelling five-set victory over Jannik Sinner, before which he’d played two tough four-setters as well. 

Heading into this match, it’s déjà vu for Zverev. The German has just played an immense five-setter against Cameron Norrie in the round of 16. The match went to a fifth set tiebreak—Zverev’s second of the tournament, having also played one in the second round against qualifier Lukas Klein. 

It may seem crass to expect a repeat of 2023, but it would be naïve to think otherwise. Alcaraz is fresh, and the better player regardless of what condition Zverev turns up in. Given we can expect a tired Zverev on Wednesday, chances are the Spaniard will waltz through this one in straight sets.
