Race 5: AJ Scahill Cup
With plenty of big races on the agenda at Ascot on Saturday, picking which race to get on board with is tricky but the AJ Scahill Cup in race 5 promises to be an excellent contest, that is catching the eye with punters and Aussie bookmakers alike.
A handicap contest over 2100m, the AJ Scahill Cup carries a prize fund of A$125,000 and with some excellent horses in the mix, it should be a real battle in the Western Australia sunshine.
AJ Scahill Cup
There are plenty of reputable horses in this one, with the race often touted as a contest which produces future talent.
Topping the betting is Casino Seventeen, a consistent 6-year-old that has bagged almost half a million in prize money though a solid career so far. With a 74% placing percentage, from 31 career starts, punters know what they are getting with Casino Seventeen and whilst it won’t have things all its own way, it looks to be the horse to stop at $2.40 with Playup.
Next up in the betting is Black Fantasy, a horse that has an excellent record, particularly at Ascot and it should be firmly in the mix here. Recent runs will perhaps deter a few potential backers, but Black Fantasy is certainly proven at this level, and it represents decent value at $5.00 with Bet365.
The quality of this one is best outlined by the other horses in contention, with Another Chino and Queen Alina next up in the betting ring. Both horses come into this one off the back of decent showings at Ascot and with conditions that should suit, they both look to be worth keeping an eye on at $6.50 and $8.50 respectively with Punterspal.
Race 7: Western Australian Guineas
Ran over 1600m, the Western Australian Guineas is a contest growing in stature and it possesses some of the quickest horses in the state in 2023.
A contest that is really piquing the interest of new betting sites this should be a fascinating battle, with speed the order of the day for all concerned.
Some excellent horses have clinched the Western Australian Guineas previously and once again this year, it should be a superb contest with half a million dollars in the prize pot.
Western Australian Guineas
Calling this one is no easy task, with some fantastic horses, jockeys and trainers in contention and it looks set to come down to fine margins on the day.
The horse to beat at the top of the betting looks to be Super Smink, a horse that has frequently belied its young years and it looks to have a very successful career ahead of it.
With a 100% placing record from 7 career runs, Super Smink clearly enjoys the conditions here at Ascot, having finished second over 1400m last time out and whilst there are some horses to beat, it looks to be the hot favourite in this one at $2.90 with Punterspal.
A prestigious talent is next in the betting, with Keshi Boom long having been touted as one of the hottest prospects to come out of Western Australia. With 4 wins out of 4 career starts at Ascot, Keshi Boom looks to have the credentials to go far, with the 1600m trip in this one seemingly ideal too.
This will be the stiffest competition Keshi Boom has faced but it certainly can’t be discarded at $3.10 with Playup.
After the top two in the betting, the field does start to become a little more stretched, but Zipaway and Invesmentstrategy are the next two horses in the betting that could be in the mix. They will need to run the races of their lives so far, but they could find themselves in the mix at $8.50 and $11.00 respectively with Bet365.
Race 8: Railway Stakes
Group 1 racing in Western Australia is becoming increasingly big news and the Railway Stakes from Ascot on Saturday promises to be another epic encounter.
With a cool A$1.5 million in the prize pot, the stakes could not be higher here, with some of the quickest horses in the business doing battle.
Railway Stakes
The Railway Stakes is one of the biggest races in both Western Australia and the country as a whole and it should be another epic encounter in 2023.
Topping the betting is Alsephina, a hugely promising 5 year old who has an incredible 100% placing record from 13 career outings. Finishing second at ascot last weekend will be the perfect precursor for Alsephina here and whilst the competition will be fiercer this weekend, it does look to be in the perfect position to mount a serious charge.
The betting markets are moving and shaking constantly but Alsephina is the market leader at $4.80 with Bet365.
Next up in the betting market is Tuvalu, a proven performer for years at this level and with Jamie Kah on board, punters will be backing it to the hilt. Tuvalu is a horse that has a tendency to produce the big moments when it matters most and with a clear run here it could be difficult to stop at $5.00 with Playup.
The quality of the rest of the field in the Group 1 Railway Stakes is clear for all to see, with both Roots and Kiwi flyer Forgot You sure to have their say if they get a good run. Both horses have experience of winning races and performing well at Ascot, making them good shouts here and they are two to keep an eye on at $6.00 and $16.00 respectively with Punterspal.
